When the Sun Don’t Shine

Filed Under (News) by Lindsay on 23-04-2008

I don’t know what it is about a grey spring morning, but somehow it gives me more energy than a morning spent with the sun. Sunshine makes me want to be lazy, drink my coffee slower, where a day with thicker, darker air just makes more sense for me to get going. At least my headache is gone!! All this sun after SO MUCH SNOW has done a number to my body and I haven’t been as clear as the sky since the sun-shiny days began. Don’t know what that’s all about. Anyway, today is a new day and thank God for those. I head to Ottawa to play a show down town, I haven’t played Ottawa in months, the band I am sharing the show with (it’s at Irene’s on Bank incase you are reading this and would Love to come listen to some great music on Friday night) is backing Megan Hamilton, a super songstress, her band is called “The Volunteer Canola” (the name having something to do with farming & spring…) Anyhoo, please come down & pretty soon, I’ll be putting a link up with an interview I did on 1010 Talk Radio… Look for it, come see a show, and most of all today is a new day.

How to write a Song…

Filed Under (News) by Lindsay on 15-04-2008

First I clean up my room, then I sweep the floor, all the while doing laundry, organizing my drawers, emptying the incense tray, cleaning out the candle holders, tidying up the living room, doing the dishes, organize my CD rack, water the plants, go for a bike ride…… oops! I was meant to write a song, wasn’t I? So, yeah, sometimes I get a little, just a little off track, but when I finally do get back on, I start out by strumming the guitar… only after the whole house is clean, the candles are lit & the ringers turned off.  Sometimes I try new chords and then this meldoy just starts making it’s way from my brain to my mouth, the lyrics sometimes come with no thought at all. It sounds strange but I’ve written entire songs without thinking about them at all. More often then not, I start a song and it remains half written for quite some time. There really is no particular A-ONE way to go about putting pen to paper and melody to lips… but you really should have a tidy room. It helps.

Peace & Quiet in the Big Smoke

Filed Under (News) by Lindsay on 07-04-2008

It’s amazing how even in BIG CITY LIFE you can find calm & quiet. It’s not at all the FAST PACED crazy world I thought it would be. Nice. I’m staying right smack downtown in the middle of it all for the week it’ll be nice to not have to spend SO much on the subway every day… had to walk to a party the other night (i had to, i know) & in doing so I walked passed the Horseshoe Tavern, which is WAY more a drinkin’ dive than I thought it would be. And along the way, ran into a screaming man.  He was so mad… at the air. Poor fella. Then when I got to the party (right beside the Cameron House… a very funky little venue) I ran into more small world moments. I swear to God, there are Newfs everywhere & I Love it.

Small Town Toronto

Filed Under (News) by Lindsay on 03-04-2008

Yeah, I thought Toronto was going to be big & scary. But now I realize that it is Canada after all. If you’ve met people, chances are you’ll meet them again. I can’t get over how many small-world stories I have lived through in the days that I have been here.  It gives me such a sense of RIGHT PATH RIGHT DIRECTION when running into bits & pieces of my old life in new places. Brings on a whole sense of calm… and just to think because I turned left instead of right… or stayed instead of going, or opened instead of closed. What we all need, is a sense of belonging or purpose & the thing IS is that there’s space for all of us & purpose too. So let’s stop the whining about what we have or don’t have and let’s get out there & trailblaze the map. Turn left instead of right.  Lxo

Thank you lord Jesus. I am so excited for this warmer weather… can’t really take another day of trekking through snowy streets… they don’t plow the sidewalks in Toronto, I used to think living in St. John’s was bad in the winter time… anyway, no more complaints from me as long as I can put away my winter boots!! In the meantime, Easter is one of my favorite “holidays” In my family we go to the Sugar bush; sleigh rides, maple toffee & a great brunch feed in the middle of nowhere Quebec, then we all head over to some family members house (whoever doesn’t mind cleaning up the mess!!) We paint Easter eggs & eat tonnes of chocolate, then the next day we all get together for a major home made waffle breakfast… it’s truly scrumptious!! But not this year, this year I was here in the big city, being taken care of by some GREAT Toronto people… most of whom are from the East coast, Cape Breton & Newfoundland… thanks my new (& old) friends… also, a big thanks to the great Geoff Berner… please, if you haven’t seen this man LIVE, you have to go. He’s on tour in Europe now, so wait ’til he gets back, I promise you will not be disappointed. In the meantime, have a listen to 1010 talk radio www.cfrb.com tonight at 6pm.  Also, get ready for an awesome gig next Monday at The Supermarket in Toronto… featuring  Myself, Dave Gaudet, Meredith

So the weather is finally thawing… now that the days are longer, and spring is close… ooh laa laa… things just feel better!! Thankfully!! As for the continuation of my CMW rants… Seeing bands perform from all over the world makes one realize how music REALLY IS the universal language… Ireland, Australia, Toronto, Vancouver… having the pleasure to share the stage with such talent as “Sick of Sarah” a great chick band from the States… definitely check them out!! I had the pleasure of meeting with some great music execs, had a chance to chat with Terry McBride, who was just inducted into The Canadian Music Hall of fame… I saw Moby interviewed aswell; when asked the top 4 things he would do if it was the last day on earth, he replied: eat burritos, play Led Zeppelin covers, drink cheap beer & make sweet Love…on another note, I may be heading over to Germany to play!! What a rush… I can’t wait until next year… In the meantime, I have some great things happening here in Toronto…besides having an abundance of performances to listen in on, great food around every corner, a gym membership, gigs to prepare for and an irish session to play in, I have a song-writer night to organize.. This takes place at The Supermarket (in kensington maket) on the last Monday of every month… so stay tuned for all the great artists who will make the roster… the first show is on the 31st of March featuring: Myself, Ron Leary, Meredith Luce & Dave Gaudet. You won’t be disappointed!! Talk soon,  Moi xox

Hey Folks, I’m not much of a morning person, but this morning, when I got into the kitchen, the radio, MIX 97, was playing my song, 1000 Kisses. This made me very happy! People ask me what it’s like to hear myself on the radio and I say “hell yeah, bring it on!!!” I haven’t been pursuing the dream of music to have my first brand new album sit on a shelf!! Last night, my cousin was driving home and heard my song “8th Wonder” on The Bear, in Ottawa… what a thrill to get that message in my inbox this morning. I can feel it, it’s just a matter of time now. I played a show last night and asked the audience if there was anyone out there who heard my songs on the radio, prompting them to come to a live show, and wouldn’t you know it, hands went up!!! Thank you radio!! I can feel a new song coming… Lxo

Greetings you fine people out there. What an incredible Canadian Music Week in Toronto. I had no idea how HUGE this week was going to be. It was an enormous gigantic rush of people in the music industry, all with the same agenda; talk, listen, learn & play!!! What wonderful things to have in common with one another. The energy was great, I just couldn’t believe how friendly and wide-eyed every one seemed to be. There were SO many highlights, I just don’t know where to begin, hence the title of this blog (I always dislike that word, oh blog!!) “To be continued” because I know there will be more moments to add as the weeks go by. I really am still flying…. one things for sure, if you would like to hear a bit of the hustle and bustle and an interview with me including exerpts from my new album “sound” have a listen to CFRB Toronto’s News Talk Radio on the 23rd of March at 6pm. You can also go to their website & have a listen online at www.cfrb.com I will start by telling you about one major highlight and that was: Having the privilege to hear Alanis Morrissette answer some very personal questions, 20 feet away from me!! Yeah, she was interviewed for an hour… and truly spoke to my heart. She is an inspirational creature, spiritual & quite beautiful. Chatting with Garth Hudson of “The Band” was pretty awe inspiring as well. So I will leave you with that wonderful taste in your mouth and write a little later…. Love Lindsay

Cold Dark Days, YEAH for MUSIC!!

Is it me or is this time of year an energy sucker? All I want to do is lay curled up with a book or a dream, or a new CD. Speaking of new CD’s, I went to a wonderful release party… my first introduction to Hugh’s Room in Toronto. What a magical place… a “listen if you know what’s good for you” type of place… and listen I did (and helped decorate too…) Tannis Slimmon!! What an amazing woman, in fact I couldn’t possibly find the right word to describe her, I think I’d have to write a poem maybe… and thanks to these cold dark days, I’m just too darn tired to put pen to paper… though that will all have to change in the coming week, as it’s CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK and I will have to be awake & alert for all the crazy days & nights that lay ahead. Anyhoo, life is beautiful, I mean I’m not really complaining, I just really look forward to the sunshine staying & the energy being re-fueled… ya know???
