Day 12 at Gallery Studios

Hey folks. Here I sit, on the comfy ‘used to be white’ couch. This little love seat has been my home for the last 12 days, back ‘n forth between the microphone and these plush cushions! It’s been an amazing process so far, here, tucked away in the basement of a church in Ottawa’s Glebe. With Dean Watson as my producer, I have been blessed. Dean and I have been friends for years and we work together even better. Not only does he have the ears of a bat, but he is an excellent musician as well. When I emailed him (or was it Facebook?) a few months ago, he was gung ho, and I was so excited by his positivity, he was happy to take on the project, and a 12 day project at that!! The first cd I recorded took exactl y one year from it’s start date to the CD release party… and I decided to do exactly the opposite this time and so far so good! Last Autumn, I won $5000 towards my career, through The Big Money Shot music competiton (Live 88.5 NewCap Radio) and immediately knew it had to be put towards this album. It also has to be said that I could not have done this without the help of my band mates; Rob Rose, Chris Hopkins & Rob Milicevic, their musical skills have saved me on more than one occasion. They are also featured on this new album, which will be called “Monkeys Under Stars.”  As I sit here typing to you, Dean is working hard, and we are listening to “Got No Time” in its (almost!) finished version. With only one more song to go in the “mixing” department, the album will be ready for it’s mastering session (with Bova Sound Studios.) Mixing is akin to balancing things out; perhaps taking harmonies down in volume,  or cleaning up the sounds of the drums (i.e taking the tom drum echo out of the snare hits) it’s actually a long process… cleaning up breath, aligning everythign together, syncopating it all, so there are no odd sounds or beats in the mixture! An analogy for the mastering process has been explained to me like this: take your favourite spaghetti sauce, it’s delicious!! Add to it a little parmesan, gruyere or mozzerella and the pasta dish just became even better… I never eat my spaghetti without cheese, and I suppose mastering is like the cheese! It polishes off the sound, rounds it out in a way… SO! The best news is yet to come… The CD Release will happen at The Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield Quebec on June 5th. See you there??? Xo (turns out we need to finish the mix on ONE more!! Day 13 it is!!)

Spring brings new things!

April showers bring May flowers! So here we are, in April, waiting for the rains to pass and for May to fill up our glass! It’s been almost two weeks since I’ve been home in Canada, and when I left Europe, the flowers and trees were in full bloom, so, this means I get TWO Springs, so I won’t cry too hard over the constant grey skies and soon, I KNOW they will be blue for all of us! Cheers to the bright beauty that is to come! Wair there’s MORE… This Saturday night, April 30th there is a benefit for HAITI, in Ottawa at D’arcy Magees on Sparks street. The music starts at 8pm and there will be heaps of great local music makers in support of the cause. There will be an album featuring all of the artists on stage that night, including myself at 9pm, Kellylee Evans, Jill Zmud and many others, here is the link!! http://www.ottawatonite.com/2011/04/ottawas-music-community-working-together-for-haiti/ With hopes to see some of you there! On May the 6th I am playing my first “Lindsay” show, a “Welcome Home” show at The Rainbow Bistro in the market. I will be performing a solo first set and my band will join me for a rockin’ second set. That’s next Friday night, the 6th of May at The Rainbow. I am in the middle of band rehearsals at the moment for said show, and also because I will start to record my second full length album with Dean Watson of Gallery Studios (in Ottawa) this weekend!! I am very excited to share some new songs with you all, and can only hope that the whole thing will be said and done with a big CD Release party at The Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield on Sunday the 5th of June… It’s going to be an ALL AGES show, so if you have little ones, BRING ‘em!!  Oh, and I am coming to Toronto for a show at the end of May on Friday the 27th, playing with Christina Maria at The Cameron House. It’s going to be a GREAT night indeed! In June I plan to head out on the road, for my first cross-Canada “driving” tour!! Leaving from Wakefield and heading out to Vancouver Island and BACK!! I’ve never driven it and am sure to be blown away by Canada’s beauty. Life has many things to look forward to and it all starts with the flowers that are coming soon to a yard near you!! Hope to see you out along the way… Love Lindsay xo

Music Speaks Louder

Thanks for the music. I go to sleep with songs, I wake with songs, sometimes my dreams even have a soundtrack. It's the ONE true constant in my life (besides change) and I am ever so grateful. Even living in Canada as a starving artist I am happy to have found this path. No, I have no house, don't own much except a few guitars and an old '92 Dodge. People ask for me to sing, and mostly I do... I was asked to write a song for The Black Sheep Inn, it's a place I frequent, and am inspired by, which I Love, so I said yes. It's that easy, that simple... just because I wasn't chosen by CBC to write a song for the venue I started my singing career in, doesn't mean I won't gladly do it... SO! THANK YOU to the folks who put me to the task of finding the "right" words... though, it AIN'T easy.. there are too many things, times, emotions and melodies to explore...I have been working on 3 different songs so far, in hopes that ONE will be sufficient for the February 11th debut (at The Black Sheep Inn)  I just have to remember that I am NOT here to please everyone, but if I can please a few, a few will do... xo

Top 10 shows of 2009 in no particular order

ANA EGGE Last February I was a part of a winter festival in Halifax (In the Dead of Winter) and I had the pleasure of hearing this woman’s voice, or should I say, FEELING this woman’s voice, warm honey meets soft leather, I don’t know, it’s really smashing though. You should check this American Songstress out, she is truly something.

K’Naan

After years of being on the Canadian music scene, I was finally able to catch K’Naan and his awesome band, at Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest this Summer on The Black Sheep Stage. His performance was one for the books, his message powerful and his craft well tended to, he was just so darn good! Later in his set he invited all the kids to dance on stage with him and the chaos behind the scenes ensued shortly when it was time to get off. It is however, OTTAWA and it all came together in the end.

MOTHER MOTHER

This band is by far my favourite band right now. I saw them play twice this year. Lucky me!  They came to The Black Sheep Inn, in Wakefield Quebec and they blew the house down. What a great venue to see such a tight, inventive, precise, crazy wonderful band. I am a strong Lover of harmonies, and they are seriously KICK-BUTT in this department. If you see them coming to a venue near you, RUN like the wind. I promise you will NOT be disappointed.

Craig Cardiff

Craig was a part of a musical showcase that I organized at a music conference called Ontario Council of Folk Festivals. His slot was at 3:30am, yes in the morning! It’s a long weekend of music and conferences and showcases, and by that hour, we are all tired and looking for something new in order to keep us awake! Well, Craig played his heart out, like I have never seen or heard him before.  There’s no doubt about it, he’s got the soul and he shares it.

Paulo Nutini

This guy has a voice, and stage presence and the SONGs he writes, no wonder he is Scotland’s gem right now. I had the pleasure of standing on the side of the stage for his show, as it was the same stage I performed on during The Ottawa Bluesfest and what a THRILL!! Run out and get his music, somewhere! He is worth every note.

Fever Ray

There are almost no words to describe the best show of the year. Yes, this list is supposed to be in no particular order, but she, her band was unREAL at Monreal’s Metropolis and yes, the best show of the year. I have to thank my brother for introducing me to this band… their live show is outstanding and is not comparable to anything I have ever seen. Google-ing them will not do justice. Since they are from Sweden, chances are, well you might not get the chance to see a live show for quite some time. The stage was covered in old lamps that turned on and off in rhythm with the beats, and their laser show was surreal, floating colours all through the venue. The bass was so load your whole body moved even when you tried to stand still. What a brilliant time spent.

Magoo & C.R Avery

I went to Blueskies Music festival this year, and this show was the grande finale to a beautiful camping weekend. Magoo is the M.C of the festival and has been for many years. C.R Avery is a poetically musical beat boxer who blows most beat boxers out of the water… but when C.R challenged Magoo to a musical duel, he rose to the occasion blowing every single listeners mind. No one had ever seen such an outstanding performance by Magoo, in all the years, I guess he kept his beat boxing secret… but BOY was he phenomenal, I almost fell off my feet, it was the BEST moment of the weekend by far.

Delhi 2 Dublin

Delhi 2 Dublin was the grande opener to Blueskies Music festival. They brought the entire ‘house’ down with every single attendee dancing up a storm to an amazing band from Vancouver. I have never seen such dancing at Blueskies and this is a festival KNOWN for its dancing and dancers. They even had non-dancers jiving and Loving every minute of it (including me!) Check them out, their mix of Indian singing and Celtic music is quite the combo.

Divine Brown

This was probably the biggest professional show complete with lights, dancers, and a whole separate sound board, almost bigger than the length of the bar at The Black Sheep Inn, and what a BABE! Divine Brown, what an awesome performer, costume changes, dancing, dancers and craziness! All at a little juke box jive joint on the Gatineau River. What a show!!

Steve Earle

I had the pleasure of opening up for Steve Earle at this year’s Ottawa Bluesfest. I got to stand on stage watching him sing solo with guitar, only feet away. It was such an honour to listen to songs like his one’s I have grown up with and made life memories to. What a treat. His voice is still as sweet as ever and his heartstrings still get played and he plays yours too. Singing aloud to Copperhead Road… what a blast.

Lindsay LIVE with The Lost Boys... 2moro Night!

Greetings Websurfers, Indeed, I have a gig 2moro night in Wakefield Quebec. That's Thursday the 7th, at The Black Sheep Inn. We've been practicing some new songs as a band, and boy, sometimes they sound SO MUCH BETTER with a band then when I am standing in the kitchen singing to the taps! I will also be on CKCU Radio from 8am til 9:30am in the morning, that's 93.1fm in Ottawa...I may bring out some older recordings for a treat or a laugh... depending...! I will also be performing a few live songs as well... solo style...without the taps. Maggie Meyer from Newfoundland and Megan Hamilton from Toronto will also be singing souls on Thursday night at The Sheep, so if you are in for a trek out to the hills, come join us, the fun starts at 9pm!!!

Life as a music maker is a little slower for me these days, as I am spending my daze, writing new tunes for a new album. I would LOVE to get it released next Spring, Spring 2010. My last album, released September 2007 took a year to organize, so it appears I may indeed have the time to reach my goal date, but I will of course keep you posted on all of that, I still have to choose the right studio, and that's half the battle. The songs are flowing freely and I am stoked to get them recorded...all in good time I suppose!!

Summer will see me traveling a bit, out to the East Coast of Canada for some shows and then out to the West Coast, to the Rocky Mountains!! With an exceptional gig in between at at The Ottawa Bluesfest, on July 10th, where Jackson Browne, Steve Earle and Sam Roberts will also e performing... I am SURE it will be a fabulous night for all!!

As an independent musician, I am always looking for shows. I do all my own booking (so far) and if you have anything exciting happening and are in need of Music Makers, drop me an email. With or without band!! Keep in mind there are 2 Lindsay Styles...or ring me! My number is up there at the top of this page...

On another note, I have fallen in Love with a new band called "Mother Mother" maybe they aren't so NEW, but new to me... I saw them perform a few days back, and it was one of the BEST performances I've ever seen. An amazingly dynamic, creative, melodic, harmonic, and RAW talent type of band. Check them out sometime. One more Canadian Gem to add to our musical roster of greats....

Talk soon, Lindsay xo

Ottawa Citizen: "Best Recording of 2007"

Hey Folks... that's right!! My album "Sound" received 4 out of 5 stars in the "Rock/Pop" category & has made it into this years "Best of 2007" list in The Ottawa Citizen... how cool??? Awesome!!!Other than that news... I am doing a GREAT show at the end of the month, the 28th of December, at The Black Sheep Inn... it will be just me this time, i.e. no rockin' band with me, just a quiet intimate beginning to a Funk filled night of dancing... you see, there will be a fantastic Funk band from Toronto heating up the place, featuring members from "King Sunshine" & my very own drummer boy, Mr. Shawn Rompre... they are called "Funktagon" so come on out & have a great night, dancing off all that Turkey dinner!! On the 20th of December, I will be featured on CKCU, 93.1FM, between 11pm & 12am... lots of Live music, some songs from my new album & some new ones that just might make it onto the next one... with host Charles Anthony, it is a show that you may not want to miss... but I will post it up here just in case you do!!! Take good care people & spread the Lindsay Live vibe!! Happy snow daze....
