Switzerland

This Canadian's Swiss Life

This Canadians angle on living in the countryside of Switzerland ( i.e please note that the things I have written here are from my perspective and might be entirely different elsewhere in this Lovely country.) So here I am, in my Swiss home (I live half time in Switzerland with my Swiss husband, and the other half we live in the quaint village of Wakefield, Quebec.) We have been here for a few weeks now, enjoying the nature, fresh air, great food and his wonderful family. It is a piece of paradise here, we have sheep grazing in the fields around our house and there is a fresh water spring right outside our front door. Things are, of course, a little different here, as one would expect, but nothing too 'far fetched' that I can't get accustomed to. For instance, we shop for groceries alMOST on a daily basis, our fridge is just a smidgen larger than a bar fridge that you might find in a Canadian hotel. I actually don't mind the smaller space, I suppose if our household held more than two people, it would be a different story. I could also tell you about how on Sundays, even the 'not-so-devotional' take a break and rest. One can not make really loud noises on a Sunday i.e chainsaw, mow the lawn etc. Oh and our chimney is cleaned TWICE a year over here and if they find any metal in there i.e a nail from a board, there will be fined! People here are very concerned about how their lawn/house looks. You will very rarely see a house that has junk around it and almost always see flower boxes filled to the brim around all the windows and the gardens are spectacular. Many folks around here grow food, in fact we planted our very first garden together this year and all from seed!! We have all types of deliciousness growing; broccoli, lettuce, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, pumpkins, celery, zucchini, egg plant, radishes.... So much!! (who is to say if any will bear fruit as we may have started it all a little late?) Oh, and here, the main culprit against anything growing is NOT deer/animals looking for a snack (like in Canada) but snails and slugs!! They are everywhere... We have been saving all our used-up coffee grinds as they are supposed to fend of the little guys... Seems to be working (a little) but we are always finding them around. Some people say to put hair around the plants but I just can't. Perhaps I have watched too many episodes of The Walking Dead. No hair in my garden *shudder*  On the bus here (mainly in the country, as opposed to big cities) you say hello to the driver and the people on the bus, and when you get off, you thank the driver and say 'have a nice day.' My Swiss German is getting better, I can now say all of that ;) Here, they say 'Hallo zäma' or 'Grüezi Mitenand' which basically means 'Hello Together' (you never say zäma or mitenand when there is just one person.) Indeed, there are many things to learn over here, especially in the language department, but I can 'get by.' I know the giggles come from the fact I say things differently, but everyone now knows what I am talking about (when I need them to!) which is SOMEthing, right?? And we use our hands a LOT.

I Love my little life up here, out here, and I have to say, I am a healthier person while living here. There are not nearly as many options for junk food (there are two main flavours of potato chips here; Regular and Paprika -which tastes faintly of our BBQ version- you can get Salt 'n Vinegar in some places, and and a few other types but most of those 'specialty' brands are too expensive and you get very little. Nacho chips are also few and far between definitely no Tostitos or Doritos (how I miss the Zesty Cheese!!) There are no fast food restaurants anywhere near-by, so we have to cook!! While over yonder, in Wakefield, the options to eat out are simply endless.. I think there are at least fifteen places with tantalizing food options (okay, Tim Horton's not so much.) I do miss the easiness of life over there, some nights I have no idea what to prepare and am SO bored of my options (I just want a poutine!!) Some days I wish someone else would do it for me (Pizza delivery??) but mostly I am okay with it. Any type of food product that has anything to do with cream/milk is simply the BEST over here though. One of the famous desserts here is the combination of Ice Cream, Whipped Cream and Meringue. Oh my god. Yum. The bread here is unreal too. Many people that I have known with a bread allergy can eat it over here. It must be the lack of shit they spray on the wheat fields, who knows, but no tummy aches from eating it. You can buy freshly baked bread at all the grocery stores, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. It is so darn good! Take that bread, add a little Gruyere cheese and a glass of red wine and you have the perfect meal. Well, a perfect starter, anyway. (is anyone else getting hungry??)

People here are also wonderful, once you make the effort to get to know one, that is. If you have the courage to speak with someone (first,) you will generally get warmth in return, maybe even an invite to dinner (being a foreigner has its perks!) I have heard it said that the Swiss are 'prudish, straight-laced,' but in reality, the people here are just a little more respectful of privacy and mindful. I would also say generous. If you make a friend here, you will have them for life, there is a great sense of loyalty in a friendship here. I would never put the term 'wishy-washy' alongside Swiss. There are definitely a LOT of rules here though. Possibly because the country is so small, but almost everything has to be accounted for. If you want a dog, you have to take a six month course on how to be a good dog parent, i.e you must get a license. If you want to burn some brush in your field, you have to get in touch with the forest ranger in your area for permission. If a law is to be changed, the country is sent info about it in the mail, with voting cards, and everyone votes on it. Decisions are not made by one head man in power. The people here have a voice and they use it. Oh and recycling is amazing. There is a spot in every village/town and in various places across cities where you can put your recycling. A separate box for white glass, brown glass, green glass and a spot for all metals. The plastics get put in a container at your grocery store. There is actually a nice rhythm to it all, even if a little meticulous. I think many places around the world could learn a lot about how things can be done in a more reliable manner. Some rules I would scrap, of course, but many, I can live with!!

For now I am happy here, but always, no matter what, a small part of me is missing my Canadian life... just like while I am in Canada, a small part of me longs for Switzerland.

You just can't have it all :)

Hugs in the interim,

Lindsay xo

Health Music Love Food

In no particular order, I suppose these are four of the most important things in my life. How bout you?

What are your top FOUR???

I just signed up for the #30x30Challenge via the David Suzuki Foundation. Here is the link http://30x30.davidsuzuki.org/ Basically, it is to get people more involved in the "Nature of  Things." What a smart thing to do, get people across Canada (or wherever!) to sign up for a daily dose of outside stuffs. Sometimes things are just easier to accomplish when you know other people are doing it with you. I wish I could MAKE MYSELF get out into nature daily, for thirty minutes or more, but I find myself doing other indoor type things and the day is gone when I finally decide to make the 'outside stuffs' happen... I am certain I am not the only one, so I truly welcome this challenge. If you want to get involved it is never too late, just click on the link. If you are interested in following me and my journey, I will be posting photos daily on my Instagram photo site http://instagram.com/linzferg so come follow me!! I will also be forwarding those posts to https://twitter.com/linzferg ... Long live healthy doses of HEALTH!! Oh, also, in other HEALTH news, I quit eating chocolate for the month and living in Switzerland does not make this easy... Dang! But, I can do it!!

Onto music news....

Well the new album is rolling along smoothly and it is great, if I do say so myself!! It's funny and strange, but every time I get a mix sent to me, I get shivers from hearing it. This is not the norm, as I am usually sick of me after the recording process, but seeing as I let go of a lot of the creative control, putting it into the hands of my producer, Brock Zeman who added Blair Hogan to the mix, the new tunes are sounding fantastic. Even my Dad likes them, saying  they are radio worthy!! How exciting??? (On a side note, Dad used to work in the radio industry, as a news/weather man, so, well, HE KNOWS ;) ) Haaha... Yes, I am thrilled and look forward to the day when the whole project comes together, and of course when it can be sent to YOUR ears :)

In the meantime, I am living in Switzerland these days (hence the chocolate issues) and have a few gigs coming up here. Lately I have been a fan of house concerts. This type of concert is fast becoming popular in North America but only just getting started here in the land of Chocolate and Cheese. So tonight I make my debut performance in someones home in Wichtrach, CH. Last weekend I was in Bern city, singing in the privacy of one's living room... It was quite special and I wrote blog about it over on my Facebook fan page, you can read it here https://www.facebook.com/lindsayfergusonmusic While, I LOVE performing in fantastic venues, there are a shortage of fantastic venues. What is a fantastic venue? How about one that holds attentive listeners? My performance is SO.MUCH.BETTER when I have the attention of the people. Some of you might say "Well, it's up to the performer to grab the listener's attention!" I will not dispute that, BUT when there are T.V's on in the back showing sports games, and people sitting at the bar who didn't buy tickets, and are not there for the music, one must compete with conversation which is hard. See, most venues are TWO things... A place to go see music and a place to let loose after work. Some places are known for their music i.e The Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield Quebec where people DO go to listen, even if there is a T.V on playing sports, as there IS an exception to every rule... but a living room concert is a wonderful place to unleash an artistic performance. They are SUPER easy to organize, as well. No stress!! Just a fun, intimate party with nibblies, wine and songs. Book one today ;)

Soon I will be singing in Luzern, and Zurich too. You can find the list of gigs at the end of this message.

Love sweet Love.

It is extremely helpful to have it in your life and I am extremely blessed to have found it.... People ask me "But now that you have found Love, where will all the torturous songs come from??" Well, thank GOODness I have lots of friends who experience torturous Love-fails, plus I have enough of my own experience on the back burners to call upon if needed. Of course the occasional LOVE song isn't so bad, is it???? Ha!

Food.

Mmmmmmmm FOOD.

I have been a foodie for as long as I can remember.... But only now, am I a cook. I was in the service industry for SO many years that I just ate at work or ate out... But since finding a partner-in-crime, I find cooking so much more enjoyable.  Working for chefs for SO many years, I must have caught on to how to do it right... (at least that's what my hubby says ;) ) We started our first vegetable garden this Spring... I simply can NOT wait to get my hands on the veggies that I grew, Loved and tended to mySELF!! Yes, sometimes the small things are the BIG things!! Imagine, me a green thumb. Lucky for me I have a helper in my hubby... We have sunflowers, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, and more! Grow a garden, folks!

SO that is my blog today. I have given you LOTS of links, and ideas, I hope...

East Coast Once More

So! It has come to be that time again, where I say good bye to one home and hello to another. We picked a doozy of a Canadian winter to live in a trailer with no running water. Let me tell ya! However, there are always positive sides and enduring everything that comes with a broken leg in such a small living space made the break a little easier to deal with! I will not be jumping off the back of a boat in Dominican any time soon or rather, never!! And once again, time becomes a question, it seems like only a short while ago I was hanging out with Chris Hadfield at the Ottawa Folk Festival. It sure has been an interesting ride, living by the heat of a wood stove, on a horse ranch outside of one of the coolest villages I know of, ahh sweet sweet Wakefield. Just a quaint little town with an eclectic vibe alongside the Gatineau River! Alas, when I think of the trails, the folks and the foods of Switzerland, I can not be sad.

Firstly though, I will be heading towards the Atlantic and out to Nova Scotia for a few gigs and then up up and away!! On a side note, if you haven't made your way East, I highly recommend it. The people, the fish, the view! Oh my! Indeed, that is where myself and my roadie/husband are headed, and soon! Ich freue mich as the say in Swiss German, and in English; I look forward!!

Packing has been another story entirely. I am still in awe of how much stuff two people can attain, even with living in such small quarters. I even purged a few "filled to the brim" bagsand yet I am still bombarded with too many things, certainly too much to take overseas. Thank goodness for friends and family with extra storage space! Having changed over from driving a van (for many, many years) to a smaller more efficient car, a Toyota Tercel, there isn't much space for suitcases and music equipment! Alas, where there is a will, there is a way.

Speaking of music.... My latest labour of Love and my newest record "Chameleon" is in the mixing stages!! What a thrill to be able to make a new album and with such talent as Brock Zeman, Blair Hogan and Steve Foley, I could not have asked for better... I am chuffed to bits about it and truly can't wait to share!! I think I will  dedicate an entire blog about the recording process as it was really something else. I am hoping to release it in Canada at the end of summer and perhaps in Europe before then, however, time will tell! I will, indeed, keep you all posted.

Now, with that, a few more odds and ends to take care of and then East, to the ocean!!

And there July was, gone.

Hello from this 200 year old farm house. We live on the top floor and considering the HEAT that this Summer is bringing us, it's not so bad with the windows wide open when there is a breeze flowing through.

July was a wonderful somewhat cool month, filled with new song-writing, sweet music playing, delicious barbeque eating and refreshing river/lake swimming.

I having been missing my Gatineau River and the people and food of the wonderful Wakefield Quebec, but life is pretty wonderful up here, out here, a five minute drive to the Alps.

We went swimming in the River Aare, or rather "floating." It is a fast paced river, and you just get in with a floaty of some sort (in my case, a waterproof bag to store some drinking water, my towel etc) and go sailing down the river rather quickly. It's a blue/green crystal clear river which reminded me of white-water rafting (with ROAM -Rivers, Oceans and Mountains) down the Chilcotin River in British Columbia, without the raft of course. It was pretty amazing but for some reason I kept getting away from the rest of my friends and had to "swim" up-river so that they could catch up to me which made my leisurely float a tad less leisurely and I could definitely feel it the next day... the GOOD pain, you know??? I remember when we were in B.C in the big yellow rafts, we would have to plan our lunch spot or camping spot for the night well in advance so we could make the stop and not get swept away by the current... Well it is a little more difficult when planning a lunch stop with a little floaty bag, naked toes and wimpy arms...you risk smashing into the rocks that you are about to sit and eat on. I have a little bruise on my elbow, but really, all was SUPER fun and I would do it again... actually the best part was diving down under the water, opening your eyes and feeling your body racing through the water, speeding past the rocks... Amazing, such a perfect day spent for a water baby such as myself.

Yesterday was my first time celebrating Swiss National Day. For all of the "Swiss" order of things, it wasn't as orderly as I thought it would be. See, the fireworks started at 10am and didn't stop until past midnight, people ALL over Switzerland were letting them off, everywhere and not just in one place, but next door, up the road, over the mountain, across the stream, down by the river, in the backyard, in the side yard in the front yard.... EVERYWHERE, all day. In Canada, there are the odd folks who set some off at the beach etc around sunset but mostly, townfolk/cityfolk head to a designated area and watch them all together singing chorus' of Ooooh's and Aaaaah's... Not here. Silence then BAM, silence then POW, silence then CRASH BOOM BANG!!! I had to let out a few whistles of appreciation... you can take the girl out of Canada...

I got some great news a couple of days ago. Not only am I coming home back to Canada in September, but I am playing at the Ottawa Folk Festival for the first time. It was my SEVENTH time applying, so lucky number SEVEN came through and I am pretty excited to be making my debut Canadian show in MONTHS at a Folk Festival; the same festival that EmmyLou Harris and Beth Orton are playing at. Tres cool I must say, and I can't wait to get my dirty festival feet on!!

As always, I am looking to book shows and if you are reading this note and would like to host a house concert, a backyard BBQ or a dinner & music style event... Any kind of musical event featuring ME... don't hesitate to email me at linzferg@hotmail.com

Until we meet again,

Love, Live and Smile!!

First Day of Summer 2013

And just like that, Summer began. In the darkest days of winter, most of us long for today, and here it is in all it's blue-sky-green-grass-leafy-tree glory (it's actually over-cast here, but we all get the drift!)

I Love both Seasons. All seasons, actually. Each one has it's best part, and each 0ne helps me, in some way or form, to be inspired to follow my dreams and stay on the right course. Naturally, on occasion I take the wrong road, the 'road less traveled' but in the end,  most avenues are right, as hindsight is always 20/20.

It's my first time writing here as a married woman.

The last few months were filled to the brim with excitement and plans and yellow tape and caterers and paperwork and dress measuring and clothes shopping and phone calls and invites and organizing and basking in the Love of my mans eyes. All in the name of Love and all for the best day of my life, my wedding day. It's true what they say... It was the best day of my life, and I have lived through some pretty tremendous days. This one beat them all, so does that mean it's all down hill from now?? I think I will coast on the coat-tails of being a newly-wed for awhile...

It was also the first time I grew out my nails in many, many, many moons. One can't play the chords on guitar with finger nails. I missed the sounds of the strings plucked and strummed and all those melodies that flow out while I'm rehearsing. So I'm back at it, and when you step away from it for a couple of weeks (or more??) it's amazing what comes out once you get going again. The tap from that fresh water constant-running-spring had been corked so when I liberate the cork, the water is in full flowing force. Refreshing, beautiful, colourful musical 'water.' Oh how I bask in the glory of thee.

So I am back to writing and back to booking, all as a married woman.

Some say that you feel differently in your relationship once you tie the knot. I concur! I won't go into gushy details of Love, but it does feel as though there is a tighter, kindred connection, more sincere in a way? It's hard to put into words...more secure in the saddle? Someone recently asked me how I was going to create songs, now that my heart is solid and strong. Well, thank goodness I have a unique array of friendships that provide me with stimulating stories, not to mention the catalogue of  life's drama I have already seen ;)

It's my first Summer away from my second home (Canada) in a long time. The last place I spent a Summer was in Ireland, when I worked out on the Emerald Isle's west coast, in Connemara, all those years ago. Well, here I am in Switzerland, south of Bern, a bike-ride (all up hill!) away from the Alps. It's pretty heavenly here, but WHERE isn't it heavenly in the Summertime?

I miss my Wakefield. If you ever have the chance to head up, north of Ottawa to the Gatineau Hills in Quebec, do it. Wakefield has everything from Organic Farms, to hand crafted beeswax candles, to luxurious bakeries, to the BEST bistros, the BEST poutine, and the BEST place to see live music, at The Black Sheep Inn. We have an arts festival at the end of August called 'Wakefest' and there is a market every Saturday featuring live music, fresh breads, cookies, coffee, hand picked vegetables, hand crafted felted masterpieces, local honey, local EVERYTHING!! So go check it out... Oh and yeah, the Gatineau River is the liquid Love that brings it all together.

In the meantime, I will sit up here in this old farm house on the hill, over-looking the small village I live in part-time (half Swiss time half Canadian time!) serenaded by the melody of the sheep chimes, a fridge stocked with local cheeses, delicious beer and a cabinet full of chocolate.

Remember folks,

Life is what you make it.

Love

The Italian Switzerland.

I write to you today only nine days away from Canada. I have mixed feelings about leaving here, as it is so wonderful in Switzerland, there are just so many things that are different from Canada that I Love but then there are so many things in Canada that are different from here, that I Love. As an example, here, they don’t mow the lawn at lunch time, after work or on Sundays, and they don’t use a chainsaw or make any loud noises at all during these times. It’s an unspoken rule. It’s quiet, I like that. However, when you are in the grocery store, and you are talking about what you want to get, pondering over what’s for dinner, you have to be side by side together and speak lightly, for an example if he is at the other end of the veggie section and you are in the herbs wondering if he wants some basil, you would have to go over and ask, instead of talking a BIT louder, and heavens to betsy if you are chatting in the line-up waiting to pay! It’s quiet, I don’t like that. Anyway, there are differences to every place, and I am very fortunate to have been here for a few months and I am also very fortunate to be getting home, to Canada, even better, to Wakefield, Quebec!

So, the “Italian Switzerland” is like a whole other country.  I was in Ticino, about a 40min drive from Milan, Italy. People don’t say “Gruezi” as hello, or “Tchuess” as good bye, they say “Bonjourno” and “Arriva Derci” so yes, everyone speaks Italian, or English, but NO Schweizerdeutsch, which is what I have been trying to learn. It’s not so easy when EVERY word has two different spellings and pronunciations. See, I have to learn High German first, so I can read here, there is no written Swiss German. And, of course there is a LOT of slang terms… let’s just say, those are coming a lot easier…I could teach you a few of those ;)

Getting back to Ticino, I stayed at a hotel over -looking the city, mountains and the Lake of Lugano. I felt like I was in the Mediterranean, you could almost smell the ocean, it was warm and all the flowers were in full bloom. Speaking of flowers, when we pulled up into the gate of the reception, it was unlike your typical “you need permission to come onto these grounds” gate, it was a cement box full of flowers that was sitting on a steel arm which would just slowly sway the flowers out of the way. Interesting camouflage! In staying with the Mediterranean theme, I chose big fat juicy prawns for dinner “Mediterranean style.” But not before I headed down to the pool, did some laps and took advantage of the bubbly “I could have fallen asleep in it” hot tub. See, I KNEW I just had to have the chocolate mousse for dessert later. The menu stated there would be THREE types of chocolate mousse on the same plate! The white chocolate kind was the best I’d ever had, well the only white chocolate mousse I’d ever had but holy smokes it was good… Later on when I was singing, a group of ladies ordered some and I saw it pass by me, and I drooled a little bit, forgetting my lyrics…it was that good. Its gigs like these that remind me of how great it can be, not that I mind the dives, but sometimes it’s fun to get treated like a star, I mean, my hotel room had TWO bedrooms TWO bathrooms, a living room, kitchen and the most beautiful balcony over-looking an astonishing view. Of course, on the way home, reality struck when we hit the Gotthard tunnel, or came CLOSE to it… it’s a seventeen kilometer tunnel under a mountain and it’s the only way out of the area, the area that EVERYONE travels to on the long weekend… We sat around for a couple of hours waiting to get through and as we were finally driving through it, I tried not to think about the ENTIRE mountain that was on top of me.

The world through the window of a train...

The last time I wrote anything of length, in true blog fashion was in the winter. It’s now Spring!! Yikes! Apologies, I know I should write, that there actually ARE people out there, reading these words, and might just be wondering where I’ve been. Well, I have been on Twitter, Reverbnation, Numubu and Facebook. Of course, making time for my very own website, now there’s an idea! Well, here I am doing exactly that. It seems I only ever have real time to think when I am actually unplugged, like on a train, rushing through tunnels adjusting the pressure in my ears. I always wanted to be able to do that, properly under water, so I could venture into the unknown with scuba gear, allowing me to breath in a completely new world…alas, my ears,  and in the end my mind, won’t let me cross that barrier… so snorkeling will just have to do! Back to the business at hand, I sit here on yet another train, watching the world speed by and there’ s a young red headed child wandering through the aisles, who obviously just learned how to walk and can’t possibly sit still. She is a real gem to watch and her rosy cheeks and sausage arms make it hard for me to look at this screen, alas, there are stories to tell! Life in Switzerland has been pretty wunderbar. Those picture books you see with the rolling hills, snow capped mountains, tree patched fields and funny shaped houses; they’re true. It’s THAT beautiful. We have sheep in the pasture where I live, and they wear bells around their necks… so there are always “wind chime” sounds floating through the air… it’s really pretty and not harsh at all, I will miss those bells when I head back, very soon, to Canada… my home and native. The fruit trees are in full bloom as well and the scents, at any given time can rush over you and make you swoon just like that first kiss.

It’s easy to write songs here. The air is fresh, the water clean and life out here in the country is slow enough that you can truly enjoy the ride and take it all in. I remind myself every day how fortunate I am to be here, working on new compositions as well as touring this Lovely country on occasion, much like today, in this train. I have a few last gigs here before I head home to Canada. I REALLY do miss Canada, though Switzerland is fast becoming a very close second. Did you know that it closes for lunch here? That at lunch time, after work and on Sunday’s you can’t make noise i.e mow the lawn, use a chainsaw, vacuum your car… etc… whatever has a loud noise… It’s not a law, I don’t think, but everyone sticks to it. Oh and I KNOW I’ve mentioned this before but the cheese, bread and chocolate is REALLY outta this world. I only wish I didn’t LOVE it all so much, my hips & bingo wings would be ever so thankful. Alas, this Love affair with food ain’t over yet!!  A few more weeks and I’ll be back to Canadian chocolate & cheese, which isn’t so tempting J

So here is a special up and coming gig I have. If you happen to be in the area, it would be GREAT to sing a few tunes for you….

Wakefield, Canada: 9pm June 21st Black Sheep Inn s/g Miss Emily & Nick Sherman; Song Circle

Rapping on the Wrap-up of 2011

I’ve never really rapped before but I’ve written some songs so it can’t be that much more. All I know is there has to be ‘flavour’ (stop) so the listener out there can ‘savour’ (stop) each word beating; each words meaning; something on the side, a main course platter…a little bit of fun is all that really matters. Folks! Apologies for starting off your read with some cheese, but it’s what’s on my mind these days, as I have been consuming it on a daily basis, what with living over here for a little while, here in the land of Chocolate and Cheese; Switzerland. Switzerland (from here on in referred to as CH) is where I started off the year 2011 and will also be the place in which I end it (the year, of course.) Tonight is New Year’s Eve and it’s usually a painful time for me, always getting my hopes up high, getting my expensive dress on, worrying about every little detail from my nails to my shoes to my set list; not this year! This night will feature me in comfy clothes not worrying about the gig, the money, the travel, the dress…no, just me and a few close friends with some good music and maybe a board game or two. It doesn’t sound exciting to all you freaky NYE fans, I’m sure, but this year has been a DOOZY, and I have plans to say good-bye to it in a sweet and tasteful way....with tonight’s menu featuring Raclette, wine & candle light, I simply could not ask for more.  It all started in 2007 when I finished my first recording “Sound.” I started thinking about the title of my next album and even started writing songs for it. Fast forward to 2011 and I KNEW I had to finally get it out of me and into you! At the end of 2010 I was fortunate enough to win some money from a music competition “Big Money Shot” and I used those winnings to record my second full length album “Monkeys Under Stars” (from here on in referred to as “Monkeys.”) “Monkeys” took me across Canada on my first “drive across Canada” tour (I’ve always has the privilege to FLY from coast to coast) but this driving thing, I absolutely Loved it.  There were a few moments of harsh reality as a Songster on the Canadian scene, but nothing could slow this free stride (or the Dodge ’92 that I slept in, drove in, ate in wrote in.) What a blast indeed. The Summer months saw some amazing times, with a hearty dose of inspiration.  I remember that amazing night under the “Blueskies” stars shared with Matt Andersen and harmonica virtuoso Mike Stevens, or those wonderful minutes of music shared by Jonathan Byrd; oh those sweet tears evoked from his song-bird poetry. This year was kind to me, if not brutally honest. My new album  scored a few pretty awesome reviews and went on to be honourably mentioned in the Ottawa Xpress as “Best New Album of 2011” and was more recently recognized in the Ottawa Citizen as a top ten album of 2011 by Ottawa area artists  (a Lovely Christmas present indeed!)  Ultimately music is with me 24/7 but I am astounded when I tap into a new sound, one that speaks to me or sings to me, rather. I found myself falling in Love with a couple of new bands this year; “New Country Rehab” and “The Sheepdogs.” All I can say is that you simply MUST find the time to see one of these bands play live, I really can’t describe how their sound made me feel, the music is just louder than any words….Speaking of words, check out “Scar Tissue” a biography about Anthony Kiedis from “The Red Hot Chili Peppers.” It’s a tough one to put down! Anyway, if 2012 is anything like 2011 I will be a happy camper, one with new songs, new sights, new sounds… bring it on and I hope this light and Love of which I speak will indeed travel to you, too. Blessings people! Have a blast! It might be the last one to blast off in!! Love you and THANK you for being here for me once again I can not do it without you music Lovers. Peace out, Lindsay xo
